Quartz Countertops Toronto

The main component in engineered quartz is natural quartz, the second-most-abundant mineral in the Earth’s continental crust and one of the hardest, only being surpassed by topaz, sapphires and diamonds on Moh’s Hardness Scale. There are many varieties of natural quartz, some are even semi-precious gemstones, which have been used since antiquity for making jewellery and carvings. Today, engineered quartz is continued to be valued for its durability, versatility, easy maintenance and aesthetic appeal, making it a choice material for countertops in any kitchen, modern or traditional.

Production Process

When used for countertops it is an engineered stone, meaning it’s a man-made combination of crushed quartz and resin. This allows for a degree of control in uniformity, colour and design unmatched in natural mined stone such as granite and marble.

Quartz Countertop Design

Since pigment can be added in the production process engineered quartz counter tops come in a great variety of colours, ranging from subtle earthly tones suitable for rustic designs, to bright metallic colours found in modern, eclectic interiors. Different patterns are offered, including more complex two toned, veined designs and also simple, uniform distributions of colour and texture. The design of the slabs makes the seams unnoticeable. Engineered quartz counter tops are available in two finishes: a polished surface with a light reflecting gloss and silky quality, or a honed/matte surface with a matte look and satin feel. These properties of quartz make every slab unique and offer your kitchen the natural stone look, without the hassles of maintenance.

Maintenance

Engineered quartz is very easy to clean – use a damp cloth or paper towel with mild soap to wipe away spills or plastic utensils to scratch off hardened residue. Metal objects such as knives can scratch the surface so cutting boards should be used while cooking and non-metal cleaning utensils are more suitable for cleaning. Due to the plastic resin used in production, quartz countertops can sustain damage from direct heat above 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Use trivets or heating pads beneath objects such as hot pans or skillets. Harsh chemicals such as bleach, nail polish remover, turpentine, paint stripping products and permanent inks may cause discoloration and should be avoided or immediately cleaned upon contact. Quartz has a UV sensitivity and is best suited for a space with even light distribution, as consistently uneven sunlight on the surface may cause discoloration over time.

Professional Installation

Quartz is a surprisingly heavy material, and requires the removal of the sink, plumbing and backsplash during installation. Properties

Engineered quartz has a smoother surface, greater durability and is a non-porous material, meaning it doesn’t require sealing and doesn’t absorb bacteria or residue like other materials. For this reason, it is stain resistant to household spills such as coffee, wine or grease. As an incredibly durable material, quartz is resistant to scratches, chips, cracks, mildew, mould, and household cleaning products and has immunity to freeze and thaw. However, this does not make it invincible and regular care and common sense should be applied in maintenance of the material.
